Living Planet Foundation
was founded to aid in the protection of climate, forest,
ocean and water ecosystems and to promote the age
of ecological sustainability and restoration. Our
focus is on key issues that threaten the earth's environment,
population and habitat and to bring awareness to the
devastating effects which humanity is inflicting on
our beautiful planet.
We hope to achieve
our objectives through educational programs, advocacy
and campaigns. Where required we will seek an active
dialogue with government, business and the public.
Where our forests, our oceans, our seas and our lands
remain natural, we will work to protect them - so
future generations can enjoy our
natural resources. Where there has already been development,
we will promote its enhancement and beautification
to maximize public access and recreational enjoyment.
Where there is a need to save our Planet's precious
resources from ill-conceived developmental projects,
we will voice our concerns and call for more responsible
management of our natural treasures.
Today the damage that humans are doing to the global
climate poses the greatest environmental challenge
that we have ever faced. The issue of Rainforests
destruction and mass species extinctions is perhaps
the number one threat facing humanity. We hope to
help create awareness about this issue and will be
announcing future campaigns to help save what is left
of our precious resources.
We have taken the lead to address a historic challenge
to the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere in India. All through
time this hotspot of biodiversity has retained its
pristine beauty and has sustained a unique ecosystem.
Now the Gulf of Mannar faces a grave threat from the
Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP), a Government
of India project. The SSCP, like many modern developmental
projects, has been inaugurated in the name of 'economic
growth'. Not only have independent environmentalists
and economists deemed the SSCP unviable but also the
project has never been debated and it threatens the
environment and ecology of the Gulf of Mannar.
We believe that the Gulf of Mannar should be recognized
as a World Heritage Site under the criteria specified
by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO). To this end, we are
leading the Campaign to nominate the Gulf of Mannar
as a World Heritage Site.
We believe that public
opinion is the most effective force for change. Its
power will make possible for the Government of India
to scrap the flawed SSCP and nominate the Gulf of
Mannar as a World Heritage Site that will ensure its
protection. Our oceans are in trouble due to decades
of mismanagement. It's time for those in power to
make better decisions by fully understanding the consequences
of ill-conceived projects on our fragile environment.
